According to the demand of the downstream industries, the report considers that the construction industry, as the one with the most steel demand, is affected by the newly started real estate and infrastructure investment in 2017 and other factors. The steel demand is expected to be 388 million tons in 2018, a slight increase year on year 0.3%. In 2017, the growth rate of the machinery industry will exceed expectations, and the trend of stabilization will continue in 2018. The steel demand is expected to be 138 million tons in 2018, an increase of 1.5% over the same period of last year. The automotive industry will continue its growth momentum of production and sales in recent years. Demand for steel in 2018 was 59.5 million tons, an increase of 2.6% over the same period of last year. In addition, the demand for steel by 2018 in the energy, shipbuilding, home appliance, railway and container industries is estimated to be 32.5 million tons, 14.5 million tons, 12 million tons, 5.1 million tons and 6.4 million tons respectively.

The conference also disclosed that in 2017 China's crude steel output is expected to grow by 3% to 832 million tons, or by 0.7% in 2018 to 838 million tons. Demand for iron ore in China in 2017 is expected to increase by 1.3% from a year earlier to 11.22 billion tons in 2016, with demand expected to decline by 0.2% to 1.12 billion tons by 2018.
